Using free weights such as weight plates and barbell sets, dumbbells or kettlebells incorporates the stabilising muscles that enable you to perform the exercise movement, making you more effective in producing overall muscular strength and power. Thanks to the lack of restriction that you would otherwise have with weight machines, you can perform a wider range of exercises that carry over to everyday life, whilst allowing your body to move throughout all three planes of motion.

Weight Plates and Barbells

A must for those serious about their resistance training, weight plates and barbell sets are used by professionals worldwide, and are available in a number of different types.

Standard Weights and Bars

Ideal for all users, whether you want to build your strength or simply tone muscle. Particularly ideal for beginners, Standard Weight Plates come in various sizes, allowing you to choose the right weight for your needs and ability. Standard Weight Plates have a 1” diameter hole in the centre and are available from 0.5kg to 25kg, whilst Standard Bars have a maximum weight capacity of 120kg, making them ideal for those not wishing to get advanced bodybuilding results.

Olympic Weights and Bars

Olympic Bars are longer and stronger than Standard Bars and are able to withstand a maximum weight load of up to 750kg. Olympic Weight Plates therefore come in heavier sizes with a 2” diameter hole in the centre of the plate. They are available from 1.25kg up to 50kg. Olympic Weights are better suited for intermediate/advanced strength trainer who are lifting heavier than the novice/beginner lifter. There are a number of different Weight Plates available, including Cast Iron, Bumper Grip and Rubber plates.

Dumbbells

Sometimes referred to as hand weights, dumbbells have a weight plate attached at each end of a dumbbell bar. Great for the strength trainer who is short on space, dumbbells help you build overall muscular strength and can be used for a huge range of exercises to target different muscle groups. Available as Fixed Weight Dumbbells, Adjustable Selectorised Dumbbells and Interchangeable Dumbbell Sets, there’s a dumbbell type for any lifter.

Kettlebells

Kettlebells are cast iron or vinyl ball-shaped weights with a handle attached at the top. Used for strength and resistance training, kettlebells are an extremely efficient and effective way to train your body in almost every aspect of fitness including endurance, strength, agility and balance. Available as fixed weight Iron Kettlebells, Vinyl-Coated Iron Kettlebells, Neoprene Covered Kettlebells, Competition Kettlebells or even Selectorised Kettlebells, they typically increment in 2kg steps, starting at 2kg up to 40kg.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are free weights?

Free weights are a range of strength training equipment that move independently to allow unrestricted motion, rather than follow a fixed machine path. Common examples include dumbbells, barbells, kettlebells and weight plates.

Are free weights better than machines?

Free weights, like dumbbells and barbells, engage smaller stabilising muscles to balance the load during lifts, while resistance machines are considered safer to use and are excellent for isolating specific muscles. A mix of both free weights and resistance machines are recommended for a well-rounded strength routine.

What are the best weights for a home gym?

Adjustable dumbbells, kettlebells and compact barbell weight sets are among the most popular options for home gyms due to their versatility and space efficiency.

Are barbells better than dumbbells?

Both offer unique benefits. Dumbbells help improve balance, coordination and unilateral strength, while barbells allow for heavier lifting and progression. Effective training programmes or gym routines usually incorporate both dumbbells and barbells.
