A treadmill is one of the most versatile and effective pieces of cardio equipment for improving endurance, heart health and overall fitness. Users can walk, jog or run indoors regardless of the weather or time, making one the ideal accompaniment to any training plan.
Our range of treadmills from leading brands combine advanced engineering, smart technology, and ergonomic design features to ensure you get the most out of every workout – whether that’s a gentle walk for injury rehabilitation, high-intensity interval training, or preparing you for the start line at a marathon.
Types of Treadmills
Folding Treadmills
Ideal for those short on space, a folding treadmill delivers all the benefits of a home running machine with the added bonus of saving valuable floor space. Once you’ve finished your run, simply lift the treadmill deck up towards the console to lock it in to place and halve the machine’s footprint. On certain models of folding treadmills, this process is automated, meaning it’s incredibly easy for just one person to operate, and reduces the risk of any injury or damage occurring. What’s more, folding treadmills are much easy to clean around and underneath than other alternatives.
Non-Folding Treadmills
More stable than a folding treadmill, a non-folding treadmill is built to withstand more intense usage. Often featuring high powered motors and larger decks, they are ideal for longer or faster runs, and often boast a higher maximum weight capacity too. Being larger units, a non-folding treadmill is a wise choice for home gyms with a little more floor space, but some models have the added benefit of in-built transport wheels to move the treadmill around easily if needed.
Commercial Treadmills
Popular in health clubs and gyms worldwide, commercial treadmills are designed to stand up to constant, intense use all day, every day. Incredibly durable, commercial treadmills allow you to walk, jog or sprint at high speeds on a larger running deck that accommodates all users.
Treadmill Benefits
Less impact on joints
Running on a treadmill reduces the impact on your bones and joints, compared to running on pavements or road surfaces. To further reduce the impact, you may choose to purchase a running machine with an orthopaedic belt or additional cushioning.
Reduced stress
During cardio exercise, endorphins are released into your bloodstream. This release of endorphins produces a natural high, which in turn relieves stress.
Improved cardiovascular endurance
Exercise of any kind will increase your energy levels, and running is one of the best forms of exercise to help increase your overall energy.
Increased lung capacity
Running will help improve your lung capacity, making you stronger and healthier.
Increased bone density
The impact of running on a treadmill causes the body to increase the density of weight bearing bones, in an effort to accommodate the stress of the activity.
Increased calorie burn
Running is a weight bearing exercise, which means it burns more calories in comparison to rowing machines or exercise bikes.
What to Consider When Buying a Treadmill
When searching for your next treadmill, try looking for features that match your training goals, usage and interactivity levels.
Motor Power
For light training, choose a treadmill with at least 1.5 CHP. We recommend 2.5 CHP and above if you will be running or jogging regularly on the treadmill, or a minimum of 3.0 CHP for high intensity workouts and commercial environments.
Running Deck Size
For most runners, a 55” x 20” deck should provide enough space. Taller users with a longer stride might prefer a treadmill deck that’s slightly longer, though.
Incline and Speed Range
Adjustable speed and incline settings simulate real-world terrain, accurately replicating outdoor runs.
Cushioning and Stability
A quality cushioning system reduces joint strain, enhances comfort and helps to protect against injury. Most treadmills have a shock absorption system, while advanced treadmills feature variable cushioning that lets you choose just how supportive you want the deck to feel.
Display and Connectivity
Touchscreen consoles, Bluetooth and app integration (e.g., iFIT®, Zwift®, Kinomap® and more) can often take your treadmill workouts to the next level.
Storage and Portability
Folding treadmills offer easy storage without sacrificing stability.
Build and Warranty
Give yourself peace of mind with a treadmill that includes a substantial warranty on the motor and frame.
Caring for Your Treadmill
Regular maintenance is required to keep your treadmill in top shape and running well. Common checks include ensuring any screws are tight (without over tightening), lubricating the treadmill deck with a manufacturer-approved lubricant spray or oil, adjusting the tension of the treadmill deck to avoid slips and making sure the motor and components are clean and clear of dust and debris.
Treadmill Accessories
Floor mats: Place under your treadmill for stability and to protect your floors from wear, as well as perspiration.
Heart rate monitors and belts: some treadmills offer wireless heart rate monitoring. Belts can be added for even more accurate readings. Alternatively, you can buy a heart rate monitor.
Advanced programming: modules can be purchased for additional workout programmes (select brands and models).
