I am going to win the jab exchanges, I’m going to hit you with 2 right hands - just 2! Just to let you know that whenever I want, I can hit you with a right hand!" Those were the words to describe St George Groves’ tactics for his clash against Carl Froch last November. As a fan of both the sport and the boxer in question, as well as a championship level boxer myself, I fully trusted Groves’ prediction and his intent, spending most of his career under the guidance of boxing trainer Adam Booth who, in my opinion, is close to faultless when it comes to game plans. [caption id="attachment_289" align="alignnone" width="600"]Boxing Gloves Who's got the edge - Froch or Groves?[/caption] I think Carl Froch underestimated Groves and assumed his recent successes and experience would ensure a safe defence of his WBA and IBF World Super Middleweight titles. What Froch was not expecting was his opponent’s clinical accuracy, speed and devastating right hand punches. Combining them with his already mapped out game plan ensured Groves’ success in his 1st round knockdown. The rest was, as they say, history with many fans and pundits around the world unhappy with the outcome of the bout which saw Froch stopping Groves in the ninth round amidst controversial circumstances. Ding Ding Round 2 The gloves are already off with the pre-fight build up making every hair on my neck stand taller than when Froch was on the floor! (Apologies to Froch fans - I cannot contain my excitement). Groves’ game plan needs to be that of the first bout. Choose his shots wisely, use his fantastic lateral movement to create that Spanish matador look, evasive but still in the pocket of Froch and mindful of not allowing the Bull that is Froch to draw him into a fight. If you have watched the build up to this fantastic night of boxing you will have also been gripped by the level of psychology and media games these boxers have endured, with many people questioning Carl Froch's need for a sports psychologist and seeing this as a sign of weakness. This makes me think he is actually appreciating what is before him on Saturday night. Let’s not forget Carl Froch is a worthy champion with a fantastic warrior mentality. Are we seeing Carl sharpening more of his sword to strike out in a similar manner to round 9 in bout 1? We are close to the opening bell and most of the exchanges of communication and face-offs are keeping the pot simmering. Are we about to see the presumed righteous winner George Groves put on a fantastic display of boxing, or is the Champion Carl Froch just too tough, too experienced at this level and better equipped with what he has to face on Saturday night? Fight fans, I hope you all enjoy a brilliant night of boxing. Who’s going to win? So what are your predictions for the big fight? Froch v Groves II - one of the most eagerly anticipated events in world boxing - will be shown exclusively live on Sky Sports Box Office on Saturday, May 31, 2014. We’ll be watching. Are you?
