With 2022 finally behind us, it’s time to start acting on your New Year’s fitness resolutions. There’s no better time than now to banish those bad habits after a festive season of overindulgence and start to ramp up the exercise. For many, however, that often means starting the year with good intentions, only to have the motivation fizzle out and end up back at square one. So how do you keep the momentum up for the long-term? Here are some top tips to help you keep on track!

Ease into your routine

It doesn’t matter if you’re a fitness newbie or a veteran athlete, we’re all susceptible to burning out if we go too hard. Sure, pushing yourself is important, but aiming too high can become detrimental to your efforts. Taking it slower at the beginning as you settle in to your new routine will obviously take more time for you to see results, but you’ll be able to recover quicker after workouts, stay injury-free and keep motivation at a high. Your body will thank you for it down the line!

Schedule an event or competition

You’re much more likely to stick to your routine when faced with the prospect of something that will take you out of your comfort zone. Be it a park run, triathlon or strength competition, booking an event early gives you something to actually work towards, and you’ll be less likely to hang up those training shoes!

Invest in the right equipment

For cardio fans, machines like the Schwinn 800IC Indoor Cycle, Kettler Sport Arena Folding Treadmill and the Bowflex Max Trainer range are good home calorie-burning options. Or, if your goal is to pack on the muscle in 2023, you may be more interested in our power racks, weight plate and barbell sets or multi-gym solutions. Either way, you’re sure to find some home gym equipment that’s right for you at Fitness Superstore.

Don’t forget, if you’re dedicating yourself to exercising three or four times a week, you may find yourself quickly tiring of your traditional routine. Experimenting with functional fitness tools like kettlebells, medicine balls, power bags and yoga equipment is an excellent way to add extra variety to your workouts to stop that boredom, and build your home gym collection over time too.

Don’t beat yourself up

The likelihood is that at some point everyone will slip up, whether that’s missing a few training sessions, deviating from your diet, or simply losing motivation after reaching a plateau. It’s important to accept that you will have ups and downs along the way, but not to let them derail you. Work within your limits, taking it one day at a time until you’re back on track.

Remember why you started

If you’re feeling demotivated and struggling to stick with your resolution, remind yourself why you started and what you set out to accomplish. Looking back at everything you’ve achieved in your journey up to this point, and realising how far you’ve already come can be just the thing to revitalise your mindset, pushing you on to hit those goals.
