Last week we said farewell to 2015, and welcomed in 2016 with open arms. The New Year is the perfect time for you to make positive changes to your lifestyle, eliminate unwanted bad habits and try brand new things. And one of the most popular resolutions? Of course, it’s to hit the gym, eat healthy and lose that Christmas weight. As we all know, New Year’s resolutions can be hard to stick by – so what sort of things should you be doing in order to make your healthy resolutions a reality? Set yourself goals Setting specific goals with a limited time frame is the ideal way to motivate yourself to make a change. Whether you want to lose a few pounds, add an extra few kilograms onto your weight session or hit a new personal best on your treadmill or elliptical - make a note of these goals, create a target date and get to work right away. Track your achievements each week The key point here is to track your progress, as more often than not this can be the best way to see change. By making note of what you lift and your cardio workout statistics, you can refer back in weeks and months to come to see just how much you’ve improved. Ditch the junk food We’re all guilty of becoming stuck in our ways when it comes to making unhealthy choices with our eating and drinking. Christmas involves all of the sugar, carbs and calorific beverages possible – so no doubt your body is in desperate need of nutritional foods at this point. By swapping your daily chocolate bar for a piece of fruit, or your regular take-away for a home cooked, low calorie meal - you’ll be well on your way to that smaller dress size. Mix up your diet Trying new healthy foods is often the best way to keep yourself motivated. By adding different fruits, vegetables and meats into your daily food intake, you will find that your meal options are endless - and totally guilt-free. And who knows, you might find you enjoy cooking more than you thought! Get yourself a workout buddy Spread the healthy love this year and get those around you involved. You could ask a friend, family member or even a stranger that you met at your local Zumba class to join you on your new fitness venture, allowing you to set challenges together and use one another to stay motivated. You might actually find it suprising how exercising and healthy eating can become fun when you've got someone to do it with! Do something you’ve always wanted to do It could be that you want to pick up a pair of dumbells for the first time, run a marathon, or climb a mountain – no matter what it is, 2016 is the year to try something new. There are plenty of events across the UK that give you the opportunity to put your strength and determination to the test whilst raising money for a cause close to your heart, so get out there and see what you're capable of. And if you fancy going above and beyond, see if you can take on a challenge per month. Small changes can make a huge difference, so why postpone it any longer? Make 2016 your year!
